Storms

I had rucked about 23 minutes from home, when my phone rang. The voice on the other end asked if I needed a ride. I responded, “no.” The voice said, “it’s storming,” and I responded, “not here.” The voice said, “well, it’s coming!” A couple of seconds later, I was caught in a torrential downpour and drenched, so much so, that my feet were squishing in my shoes. It was only a rainstorm, so I had nothing to fear. I just had to keep moving, one foot in front of the other, to get back home.

As I rucked onward, I started thinking of why storms are a good metaphor for the challenges we face in life. The phone call reminded me of all those times when someone close to me told me a storm was coming. They could see what I couldn't or had experienced what I was about to. They warned me because of the love or concern they had for me. In some cases, they even offered to help, much like the voice on the phone did. Sometimes, I heeded the warning and took the help, and other times I did not. Sometimes, I thought it was just a rainstorm, which I could easily withstand. Other times, it was a hurricane, and I needed the stability of those around me to keep me from being blown around or even drowned.

Storms, big and small, are just a part of life; they are not life. So, learn to read the weather. If it is just rain, then get wet and continue to work. If it is a hurricane, accept the ride or seek the help needed to stay on course. Most importantly, know that you are strong enough to endure all storms. As Gary Allen sings, “Every storm runs out of rain.”
